Will Karim Benzema be the next Manchester United or Arsenal signing?

After a summer full of exciting transfer news, the latest to hit the headlines this week involves Karim Benzema. The Real Madrid star was originally alleged to a move earlier this month to Manchester United, but nothing came of these rumours. The last few days have centred on a possible move to Arsenal, but will they manage to sign him or will he prefer to stay put?

French International striker Benzema is 27 years old, and has played for Real Madrid since 2009. He signed there from Lyon for 35 million, where he had spent the majority of his career up until that point. He has featured for France in both of the previous World Cups. In 188 appearances for Real Madrid, Benzema has scored 87 goals in total. As he tends to be quite loyal with the amount of time he spends at a club, and taking into account his age, he will most probably end his career at the next team he signs for.

Arsenal are rumoured to have bid £50 million for the striker, but nothing has actually been confirmed by either club, and Benzema himself has tweeted this week that he is happy playing for Madrid and will be staying where he is. However, Arsene Wenger is on the pursuit for new players to strengthen his team, and someone of Benzema’s scoring ability could be just what he needs.

Karim Benzema could definitely be argued to be one of Europe’s top strikers, and the skills he would bring to Arsenal would be imperative. Arsene Wenger often comes under scrutiny during the transfer market for not making enough moves to sign players, so a signing of Benzema’s calibre would definitely be enough to silence his critics (for this season, at least!).

A lot of the speculation regarding his move appears to have been just hearsay though social media, with no real evidence showing that Arsenal did make an invested interest in the player. Benzema eventually came out on social media to say that it is just merely rumours, and with only a couple of days left of the transfer window, it is looking highly unlikely that he will be making the move to the Premier League. That being said, the last days always come with exciting twists, so he could still be one to watch.
