Arsenal are reportedly in hot pursuit of two Real Madrid players. Both Karim Benzema and Angel Di Maria have recently been linked with a move to the Emirates but there is an air of negativity around the rumours; due to Arsenal’s complete and utter failings in the transfer market thus far.
Arsene Wenger is under intense pressure to splurge on some signings that will put Arsenal back in a position to challenge for titles. After missing out on Gonzalo Higuain to Napoli, failing to acquire Luis Suarez from Liverpool and losing the first game of the season, the pressure is mounting. The two Madrid players they have been linked with are exactly the type of signings that are capable of lifting Arsenal to a level at which they have simply not been able to reach in recent years.
So what truth is there to these rumours? Are Benzema and Di Maria likely to be wearing an Arsenal shirt next season? Firstly, let’s have a look at Benzema’s situation. The Frenchman is the less likely of the two to join The Gunners; for several reasons. For four years he has been in a constant battle for a starting spot with Gonzalo Higuain; now, with Pipita’s departure to Serie A, he has seemingly won that battle. This has put Real Madrid in a sticky spot, with only one real striker to rely upon, they can’t really afford to let him leave. Youth products Jese and Morata that can play the role, but there is a feeling that they aren’t quite ready to lead the line just yet.
Benzema then, is in a unique position; so long as he is fit, he will be first choice number nine at the Bernabeu. He is also a known favourite of President Florentino Perez’. So for these reasons, I personally can’t see him wanting to leave or indeed being allowed to leave Real Madrid this summer.
Angel Di Maria’s situation is very different however. He has had a mixed three seasons in Madrid, the first two were largely impressive and reasonably consistent. The last campaign saw Di Maria’s consistency affected severely by injuries and he was unable to reach the heights of his first two seasons. The abundance of talent in Real Madrid’s midfield has pushed the Argentine international further down the pecking order and with Gareth Bale’s arrival at the Bernabeu looking imminent, his days at Madrid look numbered. Where Benzema is Madrid’s only option in one position, Di Maria is surplus to requirements in another.
Whether or not he ends up at Arsenal is a different story though, Arsenal appear to have lost the ability to sign players, never mind top-class ones. It’s hard to remember the last truly top class player that Arsene Wenger signed. Cazorla, maybe? I can’t remember a signing that Arsenal made that would have had United or Chelsea worried. I’d argue that Di Maria would be a signing that would concern clubs like United. When he remains injury free Angel Di Maria is a top-class player and I’ve no doubts that Di Maria would improve the Arsenal side.
If I were an Arsenal fan I’d completely disregard any rumours about Benzema, the more likely option is Di Maria. With Arsenal’s recent transfer record though, I wouldn’t get my hopes up!
