Andros Townsend has had a fine start to the Premier League season. The Tottenham Hotspur winger also had an excellent international debut against Montenegro last Friday in which he scored a fine goal. Townsend is destined for a bright future at Spurs and hopefully for England and could play a key role against Poland. But for Spurs, where does he need to step up his game if he is to develop into a top player?
Andros Townsend statistical analysis
|Apps||Goals||Shots per game||Shot accuracy||Dribbles per game||Chances created per game|
Andros Townsend’s statistics confirm that he has had a flying start to the campaign. No player in the Premier League has completed more dribbles per game than Townsend, who takes on a player at a rate of 5.5 times per game. It is this direct style of play that has made him so effective for Spurs and made him so good for England against Montenegro.
Only Eden Hazard creates more chances per game than Townsend, which shows that he does have end product as well as a direct style of play. The one drawback though is that Townsend and Kevin Mirallas are the only players here who have yet to score a league goal. For Townsend this is most alarming as he’s attempted more shots than any other player in the Premier League, with 4.3 per game. Not one of his 27 efforts have gone in and only half have been on target.
Given that Spurs are struggling for goals this season it is crucial that Townsend starts finding the back of the net, especially in the context that he is attempting so many shots. Against West Ham this was the case as the club failed to score a goal. Townsend had four attempts in this fixture, hitting two shots wide and having two efforts blocked. He did though manage to complete an impressive nine out of 11 take ons.
Andros Townsend is having a very good season as we can see by comparing him to other Premier League wingers. That being said he does need to find another gear in front of goal, an area where he has been very unproductive so far this season (despite scoring a goal on his England debut). By scoring for England he has shown that he is capable of adding goals to his game, if he does this he could emerge as a top class winger for both club and country.
