Premier League Preview: Weekend predictions

Arsenal vs. Tottenham

Saturday’s early KO is this season’s first North London derby. The gap between the two rivals has begun to close over recent years, with both teams vying for that all important fourth place finish this season. Spurs lost 5-2 at the Emirates last season, despite taking the lead, but they have won at the Emirates before and have won 3 of their last 6 matches against Arsenal.

Prediction home win

Liverpool vs. Wigan

Liverpool’s home form over the last two seasons has frankly been awful. Wigan beat Liverpool at Anfield 1-2 last season and will be keen to repeat that this season. The Latics are probably one of the most inconsistent side’s in the league, they have produced strong performances this season, notably that 1-0 win at Spurs, but can also look vulnerable at times defensively. Kone and Di Santo are in form, which is problematic for a Liverpool side who have conceded 7 goals at home already this season. The Anfield club’s solitary win coming against Reading, and even that was less than convincing.

Prediction: Draw

Manchester City vs. Aston Villa

Man City have had some difficulties this season, particularly with a lack of goals from their front men as well as a failure to control games in the midfield which has cost them dearly in Europe. Despite this, City are still an incredibly formidable force at home and will probably have little trouble beating Villa, who themselves are not exactly flying.

Prediction: Home win

Newcastle United vs. Swansea

Newcastle’s bid for fourth place has been de-railed lately as a result of their home defeat to West Ham. To resurrect their bid for European football Newcastle will need to get three points against Swansea, who themselves are not as accomplished on their travels.

Prediction: Home win

Queens Park Rangers vs. Southampton

Can QPR finally record three points? This clash will see two sides desperate for three points come up against each other. A draw would, in truth, be useless for both sides.

Prediction: Draw

Reading vs. Everton

Everton are looking in pole position for fourth place at the moment and an away win at Reading would go a long way to consolidating their position as fourth choice favourites, especially as both North London clubs are in action together.

West Bromwich Albion vs. Chelsea

Chelsea are desperate for a win having failed to win in their last three Premier League games, which has led to them slipping off the pace in the Premier League somewhat. West Brom have won 5 of their home games this season and without Terry Chelsea will struggle at the back as they have in recent weeks without their talismanic captain.

Prediction: Draw

Norwich vs. Manchester United

United, top of the table, are flying right now. Norwich are doing OK, having beaten Arsenal at home, but United are a different animal. United are setting the pace at the top of the table and will expect to get another three points this weekend, with the title race only set to intensify further. On the day, United will probably just have too much about them, although they have been conceding goals which means they can be got at.

Prediction: Away win

Fulham vs. Sunderland

Fulham have only won one game in six but at home are still a difficult prospect. Sunderland can’t score goals, let alone away from home, so will probably struggle to get anything out of this tie, although they did show an improvement last week against Everton. Fulham are one of the best attacking forces in the Premier League, but also one of the most porous defences. Sunderland will probably set up to get a draw, but the attacking quality that Jol has to chose from will probably be too much for Sunderland in the end.

Prediction: Home win

West ham vs. Stoke (Monday KO)

Big Sam’s side are sixth in the league, having quietly gone about their business this season. West Ham, with Nolan as their captain, have been in fine form. Stoke have done reasonably well, but have struggled for wins and will find it even more difficult to get three points at Upton Park. Big Sam will be quietly confident about his side’s prospects for this season and three points on Monday would go a long way to ensuring their safety, but also fueling any ambitions for a potential European finish.

Prediction: Home win

Amit, Hope for your sake that you’re not a betting man

I was tempted to have a flutter. It’s more about how I came to my predictions rather than results itself. West Brom/CFC could have easily been a draw, and notably I predicted CFC would not win. Fulham home to Sunderland was massively impacted by the red card, Sunderland would never have scored 3 against eleven men
